EU to hold emergency meeting over Trump’s tariffs targeting Greenland
Brussels, January 18 (Hibya) – A spokesperson for the Cypriot Presidency of the EU Council said that EU ambassadors will hold an emergency meeting in Brussels on Sunday following US President Donald Trump’s announcement that he would impose tariffs on eight countries until an agreement is reached allowing the United States to purchase Greenland.
Members of the European Parliament and some US lawmakers were among the political leaders on Saturday who opposed the tariff threats and Trump’s goal of placing Danish territory under US control.
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola of Malta wrote on X: “The measures announced today against NATO allies will not help ensure security in the Arctic. On the contrary, they risk doing the opposite—encouraging our common enemies and those who seek to destroy our shared values and way of life.”
Metsola added: “Both Greenland and Denmark have stated clearly: Greenland is not for sale, and its sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected. No tariff threat can or will change this fact.”
European Commission Vice-President and the EU’s chief diplomat, Estonian Kaja Kallas, said that China and Russia were “very pleased” by Trump’s remarks and would be the only parties to benefit from “divisions among allies.”
Kallas wrote on X: “If Greenland’s security is at risk, we can address it within NATO. Tariffs carry the risk of making Europe and the United States poorer and undermining our shared prosperity.”
She added: “We also cannot allow this dispute to distract us from our core task of helping to end Russia’s war against Ukraine.”
