UN: More than 1,000 aid workers killed in three years
New York, April 9 (Hibya) – The United Nations called on the international community, stating that more than 1,000 aid workers have been killed over the past three years.
UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher drew attention to attacks on aid workers in his statement at the Security Council.
Fletcher stated that more than 1,000 aid workers have lost their lives over the past three years, saying, “In 2025, at least 326 humanitarian workers were killed in 21 countries, and the total over three years has exceeded 1,010.”
Emphasizing the sharp increase in deaths, Fletcher said, “This figure has reached nearly three times the number of deaths recorded in the previous three years.”
Fletcher described the situation as “This is not a coincidental escalation, it is a collapse of protection.”
Noting that aid workers were targeted while on duty, Fletcher said, “These people were killed while delivering food, water, medicine, and shelter.”
Calling on the international community, Fletcher said, “If these deaths could have been prevented, why were they not stopped?”
