UK and Germany accuse Russia of interfering with their satellites
London, November 10 (Hibya) – Germany and the United Kingdom have warned of an increasing threat posed by Russian and Chinese space satellites that monitor satellites used by Western powers.
The countries pointed to the growing number of recent incidents in which Russia has tracked, jammed, and interfered with satellites in orbit.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said at a space industry leaders’ conference held in Berlin in September: “Russia’s actions, particularly in space, represent a fundamental threat to all of us. It’s a threat we can no longer ignore.”
According to the global think tank RAND, targeting communication satellites can impact areas such as satellite imagery, telecommunications, and broadband satellite internet access. Disruptions to navigation and positioning systems could affect both military operations and civil aviation.
Ukrainian officials said that Moscow has increased its level of cooperation with China and that Beijing is conducting satellite reconnaissance over Ukrainian territory on Moscow’s behalf.
Pistorius added that two Russian reconnaissance satellites were recently observed tracking two IntelSat satellites used by the German Armed Forces and their allies. IntelSat is a commercial satellite services provider whose fleet is used by governments and corporations in the United States and Europe.
