Officials identified the suspect as a 20-year-old FSU student and the son of a local sheriff's deputy, and said they found a handgun, the service weapon of his mother, when they apprehended him.

Law enforcement officials stated that the campus is now safe and are urging students to stay away from active crime scenes. The school announced that all classes and school events are canceled until tomorrow.

The attacker's former classmate, Lucas Luzietti, told USA Today that the attack did not surprise him, as he had frequent political disagreements with the attacker.

The attacker had expressed views that civil rights activist Rosa Parks was wrong, that black people destroyed their neighborhoods, and that Joe Biden had cheated in the 2020 presidential elections.
