Türk: The army is trying to strengthen its rule through violence
New York, February 1 (Hibya) - United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk stated that in Myanmar, the army is trying to strengthen its rule through violence after forcing people to vote.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Turk said that the military rule in Myanmar, which has lasted for five years, is characterized by the suppression of political opposition, mass arbitrary arrests, forced conscription, widespread surveillance, and the restriction of civil space.
He stated that now the army is trying to strengthen its rule through violence after forcing people to vote, emphasizing that this situation is far from civil governance.
Turk drew attention to the fact that the military's seizure of power also came with the disastrous mismanagement of the country's economy, stating, "Nearly a quarter of the population is currently facing high levels of acute food insecurity, and more than a third of them are in need of emergency humanitarian aid. I fear this situation will worsen further."
Turk called on the international community, especially influential states, to double their efforts to end the violence.
