Trump Extends Deadline for TikTok Sale for the Second Time
Washington, April 5 (Hibya) – U.S. President Donald Trump granted TikTok a second 75-day extension to comply with a law requiring the popular video app to sell its U.S. operations or be banned in the country.
Trump wrote on Truth Social: "We don’t want TikTok to ‘go dark.’ We look forward to working with TikTok and China to complete the deal." The platform is currently owned by the Chinese company ByteDance.
Trump's first extension was issued after he took office in January and was set to expire on Saturday.
The social media platform, which says it has more than 170 million users in the U.S., must be sold or shut down under a law passed by Congress if no buyer is found.
ByteDance said on Friday that it had spoken with the Trump administration but "no agreement has been reached."
A spokesperson said: "There are important issues to resolve. Any agreement will be subject to approval under Chinese law."
The new extension comes as the Trump administration works to secure a deal to transfer TikTok to American ownership and keep the app running in the U.S.
On Friday, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "More work is needed to ensure all necessary approvals for the deal are signed."
