Trump announces tariffs of up to 25% could be imposed on imports from India
Washington, July 30 (Hibya) – U.S. President Donald Trump said that if no agreement is reached with India, tariffs on imports from the country could reach up to 25%.
When asked by a journalist whether India would be subject to tariffs between 20% and 25%, he responded, "Yes, I think so."
Trump spoke with reporters aboard Air Force One on his return to Washington following a visit to Scotland.
The U.S. President said, "India has been a good friend, but it imposed much higher tariffs than any other country. You can’t do that."
U.S. Trade Representative Jamison Greer said Monday on CNBC that a trade agreement with India would require further negotiations between the two countries.
The official said, "They’ve shown great interest in opening up part of their markets, and we are definitely ready to continue negotiating with them. But I think we need a few more rounds of talks with our Indian friends to understand how ambitious they want to be."
According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, the U.S. imported $87 billion worth of goods from India last year, while India imported $42 billion worth of goods from the U.S.
The main products imported by the U.S. from India include pharmaceuticals, communication equipment, and clothing.
