Thousands protest in South Korea over president’s removal
Seoul, April 6 (Hibya) – Thousands of supporters of former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol took to the streets of Seoul on Saturday to protest the Constitutional Court’s decision to remove him from office. On Friday, the court unanimously ruled that Yoon violated the South Korean constitution by attempting to declare martial law in December.
According to reports, Yoon’s supporters view his removal and conviction as a sign of democratic erosion in the country. When Yoon declared martial law last year and deployed the military to suspend parliament, he stated that it was a necessary measure to eliminate communist threats against the state.
Protesters demanded the reversal of the ruling against Yoon and called for his reinstatement as president. However, Yoon himself stated that he accepts the Constitutional Court’s decision.
Supporters equate his removal with a communist takeover of South Korea.
The country is expected to hold a presidential election within sixty days. Lee’s Democratic Party has traditionally shown more willingness to reconcile with North Korea than Yoon’s People Power Party. Yoon’s supporters see this as evidence of the Democratic Party’s inclination toward socialist dictatorship.
