Sun Lei, Chargé d’Affaires of China’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations (UN), said that China is deeply concerned about and strongly condemns the United States’ unilateral, illegal and bullying actions against Venezuela.

Sun Lei delivered a speech at the emergency meeting of the UN Security Council (UNSC) on the US military operation in Venezuela.

Sun pointed out that the United States’ practice of placing its own hegemony above multilateralism and choosing military operations over diplomacy poses a serious threat to Latin America, the Caribbean, and even to international peace and security. He stated that China firmly opposes these actions and that the international community shares similar concerns and strongly condemns the United States.

Sun Lei noted that China supports the UN Security Council in fulfilling its primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security, and added that China supports all efforts made by the UN Secretary-General, regional countries and organizations to de-escalate tensions and promote dialogue.

Emphasizing that lessons must be learned from history, Sun Lei said that military means are not the right way to resolve problems and that the abuse of military force will only lead to greater crises. He stressed that China is ready to work with countries in the region and the international community to strengthen solidarity and cooperation in Latin America and the Caribbean, uphold justice and fairness, and jointly safeguard peace and stability.
