Snowstorm in the US leaves more than 100,000 households without power
Washington, January 25 (Hibya) – Severe weather conditions affecting large parts of the United States (US) have left more than 100,000 households without electricity.
According to Poweroutage.us, as of 23:45 (ET), more than 57,000 customers in Louisiana and over 41,000 in Texas were without power. In Mississippi, more than 15,000 people were also left without electricity, and these numbers continue to rise.
As the storm intensifies, snow and dangerous ice are covering an area of more than 2,000 kilometers and continue to move eastward. By Sunday, it is expected to affect an area of more than 3,000 kilometers stretching from Texas to New England.
Power outages are increasing in the South due to ice accumulation. As the storm strengthens, there is a risk of thunder and lightning in areas experiencing heavy freezing rain and sleet.
Nearly one-quarter of daily flights in the US were canceled by the national aviation authority. The Federal Aviation Administration, which manages US air traffic, oversees an average of 44,360 flights per day. According to FlightAware, about 10,000 flights within, to, or from the US were canceled on Sunday, accounting for nearly a quarter of the flights typically handled daily.
In regions affected by the storm, sections of interstate highways were closed due to hazardous road conditions. More than half of all Americans are expected to experience sub-zero wind chills next week. Extreme cold, snow, and ice are likely to persist for an extended period, and the number of people without electricity is expected to increase.
