Rumeysa Öztürk released from U.S. immigration detention facility
Louisiana, May 10 (Hibya) – Tufts University student Rumeysa Öztürk was released from an immigration detention facility in Louisiana hours after a federal judge ordered her release.
U.S. District Judge William Sessions stated that the student had met all the conditions required for release and strongly criticized the government’s case against her.
Rumeysa Öztürk, a PhD student from Turkey, was a co-author of an opinion article in the campus newspaper criticizing Israel’s war. Her arrest came after increased pressure from the White House on what it classifies as antisemitism on U.S. campuses.
Ordering her release on Friday, the judge said: “Her continued detention silences millions of non-citizens in this country.”
Rumeysa Öztürk, who had been detained since March after being arrested by immigration officers on the streets of Massachusetts, was released after six weeks and was welcomed with applause.
