Minister Prevot stated, regarding the fall of Assad: “Today marks one year since the fall of Bashar al-Assad and the end of a decades-long regime of brutal repression.”

He noted that this change represents “an opportunity for a Syrian-led political transition in which every citizen can live safely, equally and with dignity.”

Prevot emphasized Belgium’s strong support for the transition, saying: “Belgium stands firmly behind Syria to ensure the success of this transition and strongly welcomes the commitment of the transitional authorities to build an inclusive Syria based on transparency, the rule of law, and accountability for past and future actions.”

He added: “Significant challenges remain, but without reconciliation there will be no stability in Syria.”

Addressing foreign actors, Prevot concluded: “Belgium reminds all foreign actors that their actions must aim to preserve Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
