According to NASA, the latest astrophysical observatory SPHEREx has been launched to explore the origins of the universe, the history of galaxies, and search for the building blocks of life in the galaxy.

SPHEREx, short for Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer, was launched from Space Launch Complex 4 East at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

SPHEREx carried four small satellites aboard the Falcon 9, forming the PUNCH mission, which will investigate how the Sun’s outer atmosphere transforms into solar wind.

SPHEREx will map the entire celestial sky in three dimensions every six months to achieve its broad scientific objectives.

This map will provide a wide perspective that complements the studies of NASA’s space telescopes, such as the James Webb Space Telescope and the Hubble Space Telescope, which focus on smaller portions of the sky in greater detail.
