Malaria Cases Increased 5-Fold Due to Floods in Pakistan
DEREN KOCAMANOĞLU - 01.12.2023 - HİBYA - The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that the floods that occurred in Pakistan in 2022 have led to a 5-fold increase in malaria cases in the country.
In a statement by WHO, it is mentioned that in 2022, there were approximately 249 million malaria cases worldwide, an increase of over 16 million cases compared to 2019. Changes in temperature, humidity, and rainfall can affect the behavior and survival of malaria-carrying Anopheles mosquitoes.
The statement also notes that extreme weather events such as heatwaves and flooding can directly impact the spread of malaria and the disease burden. Following the floods in Pakistan in 2022, the number of malaria cases in the country increased 5-fold.
