Iraq increases security measures along the Syrian border
Damascus, January 25 (Hibya) – Following reports that around 200 ISIS suspects escaped from Syria’s Shaddadi prison, Iraq has stepped up intelligence and military measures along the Syrian border.
According to CCTV, Iraq launched extensive security measures along the border after changes in control of prisons in Syria and reports of escapes.
As Syrian government forces took over prisons previously guarded by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and holding thousands of ISIS fighters, Iraqi border forces were put on alert amid rising risks.
Brigadier General Ali Rashid, commander of Iraq’s Border Guard Forces 6th Region, said unprecedented advanced defense systems have been installed along the border. “We have built five integrated layers of barriers consisting of earth berms, trenches, barbed wire, BRC fences, and finally a concrete wall. All these systems are supported by electronic surveillance and thermal cameras,” he said.
While a five-layer barrier system is being established along the border, reports say the United States plans to transfer around 7,000 ISIS detainees from Syria to Iraq.
