Earthquakes continue on Santorini Island, mass migration continues
Athens, February 5 (Hibya) - Due to the unusual seismic activity that has shaken the island in recent days, it has been reported that thousands of people have left Santorini in the last few hours. The tremors were also felt on the Cyclades Islands and the Dodecanese.
The strongest earthquake recorded since the end of January, measuring 5.0 in magnitude, occurred on Tuesday afternoon near Santorini and Amorgos. The earthquake was felt as far as Athens.
In the past three days, around 550 tremors have been recorded in the sea area between Santorini, Amorgos, and Ios.
To accommodate the mass migration from Santorini, transport companies added extra flights and ferry services. Most of the evacuees traveled by ferry, while fewer chose to travel by plane.
Aegean Airlines reported that between 2,500 and 2,700 passengers flew from Santorini to Athens on Monday and Tuesday. The airline stated that if demand continues, more flights will be added on Wednesday.
Sky Express also responded to the increased demand by adding five additional flights to and from Santorini starting Monday.
Schools on Santorini, Anafi, Ios, Amorgos, Patmos, and Leros will remain closed throughout the week.
