DR Congo and Rwanda sign another peace agreement
Washington, December 5 (Hibya) – The leaders of DR Congo and Rwanda signed a new peace agreement in Washington in the presence of U.S. President Donald Trump.
Trump said that the United States had signed mineral-related agreements with both countries, referring to Thursday’s ceremony attended by Rwanda’s long-serving president and Congo’s President Felix Tshisekedi.
Trump added, “I think what we will witness is a great miracle,” and continued: “These presidents have spent so much time trying to kill each other, and now, like all other countries, they will have plenty of time to embrace, hold hands, and gain economic benefits from the United States.”
However, the two African leaders adopted a much more cautious tone, as fighting continues in eastern DR Congo and the M23 militia group, reportedly backed by Rwanda, has gained strength in recent weeks according to the UN.
The peace agreement signed on Thursday is not the first in this long-running conflict. Just this past June, the foreign ministers of DR Congo and Rwanda also signed a similar agreement in the U.S. capital.
