European Council President Antonio Costa met in Belgrade with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, Speaker of Parliament Ana Brnabic, and representatives of civil society organizations to discuss the country’s EU accession process.

Referring to the foundations of the partnership with Serbia and the EU’s support, Costa said: “I am pleased to be back in Belgrade. In my meetings with Aleksandar Vucic, Ana Brnabic, and civil society representatives, I emphasized that the EU remains Serbia’s most important partner in trade, investment, and strengthening democratic institutions.”

Stressing that progress in the accession process is directly linked to Serbia’s own efforts, Costa stated: “We are ready to do more. However, the pace of progress depends on Serbia’s own determination. It is important to continue accelerating reforms in areas such as the rule of law, electoral reform, and media freedom.”

Highlighting that European integration requires broad social consensus, Costa concluded: “The accession process is not only the task of the government. It requires the mobilization of Serbian society as a whole. Time is of the essence. The EU’s door remains open, but the opportunity for decisive action is now.”
