Fu Cong, in his remarks following the adoption of the Gaza resolution by the UNSC yesterday, reiterated that China supports all necessary steps by the Council to promote a lasting ceasefire in Gaza, end the humanitarian disaster, initiate post-war reconstruction, and give hope to the people of Gaza. However, he emphasized that the newly approved draft resolution contains shortcomings in many respects, which is extremely concerning.

The Chinese representative noted that the draft resolution contains uncertainties on many vital issues, does not reflect the fundamental principle that Palestine should be governed by Palestinians, does not ensure the effective participation of the UN and the Security Council, and is not the result of sufficient consultation among member states.

Fu Cong stated that despite the many issues in the draft and China’s deep concern about these shortcomings, they abstained in the vote, taking into account the fragile and critical situation in Gaza, the necessity of maintaining the ceasefire, and the positions of regional countries and Palestine.

Yesterday, the UNSC approved Resolution 2803, adopting the “20-point plan” put forward by the United States to end the fighting in Gaza and authorizing the establishment of an International Stabilization Force in Gaza.

In the UNSC vote, 13 countries voted in favor of the draft, while Russia and China abstained.
