At Least 30 Bodies Recovered from Water at US Plane Crash Site
Washington, January 30 (Hibya) - Emergency crews have recovered more than 30 bodies from the water following a crash near Reagan National Airport in Washington, DC, according to two sources familiar with the search operations, as reported by local station NBC4.
A law enforcement source confirmed the deaths, while rescue teams have not yet found any survivors in the river.
An American Airlines jet carrying 60 passengers and four crew members collided with a US Army Black Hawk helicopter carrying three soldiers while attempting to land at Reagan National Airport on Wednesday evening at around 9:00 PM local time.
Both aircraft crashed into the Potomac River under freezing conditions, and 300 first responders were deployed for search and rescue operations.
Authorities stated that Reagan National Airport will remain closed until at least 11:00 AM local time on Thursday.
A law enforcement source described the atmosphere as "a truly grim mood even at the rescue scene." At the airport, family members of potential victims gathered in a lounge while officials worked to provide updates. A press conference is expected at 7:30 AM.
