New York, January 1 (Hibya) – The new mayor, 34-year-old Mamdani, was sworn in by State Attorney General Letitia James at the former Beaux Arts–style City Hall subway station.
Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as Mayor of New York shortly after midnight during a private ceremony held at an abandoned Beaux Arts subway station. The ceremony marked the beginning of day-long celebrations, including a second public swearing-in and a street party to be held in front of City Hall.
The 34-year-old Mamdani was sworn in by New York Attorney General Letitia James, surrounded by close family members, including his wife Rama Duwaji, his mother, filmmaker Mira Nair, and his father Mahmood Mamdani, a professor of African studies at Columbia University.
Mamdani said, “This is truly an honor and a privilege of a lifetime. As we begin our term, I look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow.”
By taking his oath at the former City Hall subway station, Mamdani also underscored how vital public transportation is to New York’s vitality, health, and heritage.
