Thomas Joseph Barrack, the US Ambassador to Turkey, announced that he has been appointed as the US Special Envoy for Syria.

Barrack emphasized that US President Donald Trump clearly laid out his vision for a prosperous Middle East and a stable Syria at peace with its neighbors. He recalled that on May 13, Trump pledged to lift the devastating sanctions on Syria to help the new government restore stability. “Secretary Rubio now carries the responsibility of implementing the President’s vision,” said Barrack, “and has stated that lifting sanctions would open incredible opportunities to establish peace and security in the region and to end conflicts and wars.”

Barrack expressed pride in assuming the role of Special Envoy for Syria as Trump’s representative in Turkey and supporting the realization of this vision. “Halting sanctions on Syria will preserve the integrity of our primary goal of permanently defeating ISIS and will give the Syrian people a chance at a better future. In this way, together with our regional partners, including Turkey and the Gulf countries, we are helping to restore hope for peace, security, and prosperity in Syria. As the President said: we will work together and we will succeed together.”
