UN Secretary-General’s Spokesperson: Israel must stop demolishing the UNRWA Sheikh Jarrah complex
New York, January 20 (Hibya) – The UN Secretary-General’s Spokesperson condemned Israel’s demolition actions targeting the UNRWA Sheikh Jarrah complex and emphasized that the property is inviolable.
The UN Secretary-General’s Spokesperson described Israel’s attempts to demolish the UNRWA Sheikh Jarrah complex as “completely unacceptable.” The spokesperson recalled that, as stated in a letter dated January 8, 2026, the complex is UN property, enjoys inviolability, and is protected against any interference.
The spokesperson noted that these actions are inconsistent with Israel’s obligations under international law, particularly the UN Charter and the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations.
The UN Secretary-General called on the Government of Israel to immediately halt the demolition of the Sheikh Jarrah complex and to return the properties concerned to the United Nations, restoring them to their previous condition.
