UN Secretary-General Guterres sent heartfelt congratulations to Pope Leo XIV and Catholics across the globe.

Noting that the election of a new Pope is a moment of deep spiritual significance for millions of believers worldwide, Guterres said: “Our world needs the strongest voices for peace, social justice, human dignity, and compassion.”

He emphasized that the long legacy of cooperation between the UN and the Vatican – recently strengthened under Pope Francis – is rooted in solidarity, reconciliation, and building a just and sustainable world for all. “This mission is deeply reflected in the first words of Pope Leo. Despite our rich pasts and diverse faiths, people everywhere share a common goal: peace throughout the world,” Guterres stated.
