UN: Desertification and drought threaten lives worldwide
New York, 17 June (Hibya) - The United Nations (UN) emphasized on Desertification and Drought Day that land degradation and drought threaten lives and livelihoods worldwide, calling for urgent climate action.
In its statement for the day, the UN said that desertification, drought and land degradation continue to pose a serious global threat.
It noted that losses in water and agriculture sectors directly affect millions of people’s lives and livelihoods, stressing the need for stronger and more decisive climate action to address these issues.
The UN also called on countries to strengthen sustainable land management and environmental policies, emphasizing that soil protection and restoration are critical for both present and future generations.
