Ukraine welcomes Trump’s claim that Russia will pause attacks
Washington, Jan. 30 (Hibya) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Trump, saying that a possible temporary pause in attacks during the harsh winter could help protect Ukraine’s critical energy infrastructure and described electricity supply as “the foundation of life.”
U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, had agreed to a one-week pause in attacks on major Ukrainian cities, including the capital Kyiv, at a time when the country is grappling with extremely cold winter weather.
Trump made the claim, which has not been confirmed by Russia, on Thursday during a Cabinet meeting at the White House.
Citing the “extreme cold” conditions facing Ukraine, Trump said, “I personally asked President Putin not to fire on Kyiv and various towns for one week, and he agreed.”
Trump did not specify when the conversation with Putin took place, but the remarks came as Russia has stepped up attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and large parts of the country are facing power outages and shortages.
