Trump backs Mamdani: We will assist him
U.S. President Donald Trump held a joint press conference after his meeting with New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
U.S. President Donald Trump held a joint press conference following his meeting with New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani. In his remarks, Trump stated that they had significantly reduced prices compared to last year, saying: “We’ve said it many times — prices in the markets have dropped by exactly 25 percent compared to last year. And of course, he will be a very successful mayor. The more successful he is, the happier I will be. Naturally, we will help him.”
Mayor Mamdani said: “My conversation with the President was extremely important for me. We share a deep love for the city of New York. We know that many people who call this city home are suffering from high prices in the U.S. We discussed a variety of topics.”
Mamdani continued:
“There are many issues in our city for which we must take responsibility. Some of these began before the President even took office. We have inherited problematic politics from the past. But we see repeatedly that the working class in New York has been forgotten. And now we will place them at the center of our politics and our plans. We are one of the richest cities in world history, yet one in five people cannot afford even a subway ticket.”
Trump added:
“Compared to when I first took office, a lot of time has passed. During my first term, we had the greatest economy in U.S. history. Now we are even stronger and more successful. Some of my perspectives have changed. There may be disagreements, but I fully believe he can do a great job. And he will surprise some conservatives and some liberals.”
Mamdani noted that their discussion was not about disagreements: “We have a shared goal — serving the people of New York.”
Trump also stated that they aim for the complete disarmament of Hamas and others. He added:
“I hope we will bring peace to the Middle East as well. You know the Saudi Crown Prince was here recently, and we are approaching a total figure of 20 trillion dollars.
Yes, Hezbollah was a major problem for Lebanon. We are working with Lebanon and everyone in the region. We want peace in the Middle East.
We get along very well with the U.K. But they have a major energy crisis. They have put wind turbines everywhere. They need to use other methods. Energy in the U.K. is out of control. They also have a major migration problem.”
When asked whether he discussed the plan with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump replied: “Yes, we spoke with some members of his team. What’s happening is terrible. They should have acted sooner, but the winter is cold. Many energy facilities are under attack. We believe we have found a path to peace, but Zelensky will have to approve it.”
When asked: “If Zelensky does not accept it, will you withdraw support for Ukraine?” Trump responded: “At some point he will have to accept something. Remember, he was in the Oval Office recently. I told him he had no cards to play. And remember — I inherited this war. If I had been president, this war would never have happened.”
