The US and Iran to meet in Oman to discuss Iran's nuclear program
Washington, April 8 (Hibya) – Iran and the United States have confirmed that talks on Iran’s nuclear program are scheduled to take place on Sunday in Oman.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed in a post on the social media platform X that representatives of the US and Iran will meet on Sunday in Muscat, the capital of Oman, to discuss Iran’s nuclear program.
Earlier in the day, US President Donald Trump announced during a meeting at the White House with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that talks were being planned.
Araghchi and Trump disagreed on whether the talks would be direct or indirect. Araghchi emphasized in his post that they would be indirect through intermediaries, while Trump referred to them as direct talks. Araghchi and Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, will lead the delegations.
The US and Israel are strongly committed to preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons, and Trump stated that if no agreement is reached, he might consider attacking Iran. “If the talks with Iran are not successful, I believe Iran will be in great danger. I’m sorry, but a great danger, because they cannot have nuclear weapons,” Trump said.
In 2015, during Barack Obama’s presidency, the US reached an agreement with Iran on its nuclear program. The deal lifted certain economic sanctions on Iran in exchange for limitations on its nuclear activities. Trump withdrew from the agreement in 2018 and reimposed economic sanctions on Iran.
