Swedish Migration Minister: "Asylum seekers whose applications are rejected should be sent to centers outside the EU"
STOCKHOLM - 11/02/2024 - HIBYA - Swedish Migration Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard said in an interview with Swedish Radio Ekot that a group of European countries, primarily Scandinavian countries, is discussing the possibility of sending individuals whose asylum applications have been rejected to "return centers" outside the EU.
Stenergard told the radio, "People with legally binding decisions but who cannot be sent back to the relevant country for various reasons should be placed here".
Migration Minister Stenergard added, "This is of course about sending clear signals that you cannot stay in Sweden violating a judicial decision. Because there is a clear obligation for the individual to comply with the deportation decision and leave the country".
