Sources: Syria tightens security following U.S. warnings
Moscow, April 22 (Hibya) – According to Ria, a source close to the Syrian government said that Syrian authorities have tightened security measures after warnings from the U.S. State Department about possible terrorist attacks in Damascus.
The source stated, "Syrian authorities have taken U.S. warnings seriously regarding possible terrorist attacks and sabotage in Damascus and other provinces in the coming days or weeks, and have ordered measures to be taken to prevent these threats."
According to the source, the Syrian leadership instructed prompt and effective action after the terrorist group ISIS declared its intent to carry out a series of attacks in Damascus and expressed its desire to join the international coalition that has been fighting ISIS since 2014. Following the designation of the new Syrian government as an enemy, swift countermeasures were ordered.
The agency’s source added, “Security services and the Ministry of Defense took several actions over the past two days, including increasing the number of checkpoints in Damascus, reinforcing existing ones, and deploying armed units to strategic areas. Security was heightened in and around Damascus, especially at the capital’s northern entrances in the Qatif area, on the eastern desert fringe, and in the southern slopes of Homs near the Lebanese border and in Western Qalamoun, where Hezbollah forces are believed to be stationed.”
According to the report, Syrian authorities also requested assistance from Turkey to increase reconnaissance flights over various areas of Syria.
Previously, the U.S. State Department warned its citizens in Syria and those considering travel to the country about credible information regarding possible attacks on tourist sites. Due to the high threat level, including armed conflict and the possibility of unannounced attacks on shopping malls and other popular tourist locations, it was advised not to travel to Syria.
