NATO to deploy a new drone-interception system to Romania
Stockholm, 26 November (Hibya) – U.S. Army Europe and Africa Commander Christopher Donahue announced at Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base that NATO will soon deploy a new American counter-drone system to Romania to intercept unmanned aerial vehicles over the Danube Delta.
On Tuesday, the Romanian Ministry of Defence reported two drone attacks in the Danube section of the Ukrainian border and sent four Eurofighter Typhoon and F-16 fighter jets to monitor the situation. The ministry said the objects were detected by radar in the Tulcea and Galați regions.
Speaking to Radio Romania, the minister said: “We have developed a new system capable of downing these UAVs. We have already begun deploying a capability that will prevent these drones from violating our airspace. The system has been tested and is in the final implementation stage. You will see it very soon in the Danube Delta.”
Earlier, Romanian outlet HotNews, citing NATO military officials, reported that the system is the new U.S. Merops platform, which uses artificial intelligence to detect and intercept drones, including through electronic jamming. It operates on a ‘drone-versus-drone’ principle and can transmit target information to aircraft and ground units.
NATO has also strengthened airspace monitoring over Romania and deployed additional early-warning systems.
