Mount Etna’s northeast crater lit up Sicily’s winter sky with its eruption
Stockholm, December 28 (Hibya) – Mount Etna’s northeast crater illuminated the skies of Sicily with Strombolian activity visible even from ski slopes. A subsequent magnitude-2.4 earthquake underscored Etna’s vitality.
The explosions, visible even from nearby ski slopes, offered tourists and locals a rare nighttime spectacle. At 00:45 on Saturday, a magnitude-2.4 earthquake struck the Etna area at a depth of 32 kilometers, another sign of the volcano’s restless state.
Experts say that while this phase of activity is not unusual for Etna, it is being closely monitored.
The crater last erupted lava in 1998, making the weekend eruption a striking reminder of the mountain’s constant vitality.
