Meloni: Our duty is to serve Italy and the Italian people
Rome, June 11 (Hibya) - Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni commemorated Enrico Berlinguer, one of the symbolic figures of the Italian left, on the anniversary of his death, highlighting the importance of a culture of mutual respect in political history.
Recalling the gesture of respect shown by Berlinguer's political rival Giorgio Almirante at his funeral, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni delivered a message of unity and mutual respect for today's politics.
Emphasizing political ethics and institutional respect, Meloni said, “On the anniversary of his death, I would like to respectfully remember Enrico Berlinguer, one of the reference figures of the Italian left and one of the leading protagonists of the Republic's political history. I also remember the gesture of Giorgio Almirante, who wished to pay tribute to the coffin of his political opponent.”
Meloni added, “This behavior, a sign of human and institutional respect, still reminds us today of the value of political debate; firm in ideals, yet respectful toward individuals.”
Stating that politics should be conducted without polarization and with a common purpose, Meloni said, “Because politics can be practiced without necessarily demonizing one's opponent, even when views are completely opposed. Without giving up debate, even heated debate, and while remaining aware that we all belong to the same national community. Our duty is to serve Italy and the Italian people.”
Reaffirming her belief in a democratic culture of debate, Meloni concluded her statement with the words: “I have always believed in and supported this: Strong ideas do not fear debate.”
