Meloni: Millions of people were killed simply because they were Jewish
Rome, January 27 (Hibya) – On the 81st anniversary of the Holocaust, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni delivered a message of determination against antisemitism while commemorating the victims.
In her statement marking Holocaust Remembrance Day, Prime Minister Meloni recalled that on January 27, 1945, with the opening of the gates of Auschwitz, the world witnessed firsthand the horror of the Shoah. Meloni said, “From that moment on, everything changed. The greatest killing machine in human history was laid bare with its ferocity and systematic operation.”
Meloni noted that millions of people were torn from their homes and killed simply because they were Jewish, emphasizing the importance of remembering the names of Holocaust victims. She added, “Today, we also honor the ‘Righteous Among the Nations’ of every nationality who risked their lives to save innocent people.”
Recalling the crimes of the fascist regime and the dark legacy of the racial laws enacted in 1938, Meloni stressed that antisemitism still exists today in different and virulent forms. The prime minister said, “We are working with determination to prevent this disease and to combat this hatred that poisons our societies.”
