Machado offered Trump the Nobel Peace Prize medal
Washington, January 16 (Hibya) – Donald Trump met on Thursday with Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado. Following the meeting, Machado said the talks “went well” and that she offered Trump the Nobel Peace Prize medal.
Her party is widely regarded as the clear winner of Venezuela’s 2024 elections, and Machado said the party is ready to govern the country following the arrest of Nicolás Maduro.
However, the White House instead moved closer to Maduro’s successor.
U.S. President Donald Trump met at the White House with Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado. Machado later described the meeting as “good.”
On the steps of the Capitol building, a journalist asked Machado whether she had given Trump the Nobel Peace Prize medal. According to sources speaking to the Washington Post, this led the White House not to view Machado as a leader in Venezuela, because when she received the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, she did not hand it directly to Trump.
Since then, she has offered to share the prize with Trump, but the Nobel Foundation rejected the proposal. Now, however, at least a step has been taken regarding the medal.
It was unclear whether Trump accepted the medal, but on Friday night Trump wrote on social media:
“A wonderful gesture of mutual respect. Thank you, María.”
