Leyen: Supporting Ukraine and strengthening Europe’s defense readiness are our main priorities
Brussels, 8 December (Hibya) – European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen made statements at the Coalition of the Willing meeting regarding support for Ukraine and the strengthening of European defense.
After the meeting, von der Leyen stated that she emphasized two main priorities.
She said: “I conveyed to President Zelensky and the leaders attending the meeting our two core priorities: supporting Ukraine and increasing Europe’s defense readiness.”
Highlighting the importance of financial assistance, she noted: “Providing financial support will help ensure Ukraine’s survival and is a vital step for Europe’s defense.”
Regarding pressure on Russia, von der Leyen said: “We are aware of the sharp impact our sanctions have on Russia’s war economy.”
She added: “The longer Putin continues his war—spilling blood, taking lives, and destroying Ukraine’s infrastructure—the higher the costs will be for Russia.”
On European defense, she said: “We are reviewing the SAFE plans submitted by member states; Ukraine appears in 15 of the 19 plans.”
Concerning Russia’s attitude, von der Leyen stated: “Russia repeatedly deceives and buys time. It mocks diplomacy while pretending to seek peace.”
