Lahbib: Consent should be a fundamental element in the definition of rape
Brussels, April 28 (Hibya) – European Union Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib emphasized that consent should be at the center of the definition of rape in European law, describing the European Parliament’s adoption of the report as “a step in the right direction”.
Lahbib made an important assessment regarding the definition of sexual violence in European Union law.
She stated that “consent must be the fundamental element in the definition of rape,” recalling that this approach had previously been proposed by the European Commission within the directive on combating violence against women.
In a development announced via the French account of the European Parliament, it was stated that the European Parliament adopted the related report. Lahbib described this step as “an important progress in the right direction”.
