Kamala Harris meets with Arab American leaders angry over support for Israel
Washington, October 5 (Hibya) - The US Democratic presidential candidate met with Arab American and Muslim leaders in Flint, Michigan, as her campaign tries to win back supporters lost by the White House’s support for Israel.
Harris reportedly expressed concern about the suffering in Gaza, civilian casualties and displacement in Lebanon during the 30-minute meeting. The official added that the vice president also discussed efforts to end the war and prevent a wider regional war.
Muslim and Arab voters resoundingly supported US President Joe Biden in 2020. Still, there are concerns they could turn their votes back on Harris, potentially costing her a key state like Michigan.
Wa’el Alzayat, CEO of Emgage Action, a Muslim-American advocacy group that recently endorsed Harris, said those at the meeting shared their frustrations with the crisis's handling and urged Harris to recalibrate U.S. policy in the region.
“Emgage Action asked Vice President Harris to emphasize to President Biden the urgency of ending the violence [in Gaza and Lebanon] immediately,” Alzayat said.
