According to estimates in the *2025 World Urbanization Prospects* report published this month by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the Indonesian capital is home to 42 million people.

Jakarta is followed by Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, with a population of 37 million. Tokyo, defined in the study as a megacity encompassing three neighboring prefectures, has dropped to third place with 33 million inhabitants. This sharply contrasts with the UN’s previous 2018 report, which placed Japan’s capital at the top with 37 million people.

The report states that the number of people living in cities has more than doubled since 1950. In 1950, 20% of the world’s 2.5 billion people lived in urban areas. Today, nearly half of the world’s 8.2 billion people live in cities.

According to the report, by 2050 two-thirds of global population growth will take place in cities, while the remaining one-third will occur in smaller towns.

The number of megacities with at least 10 million inhabitants increased from eight in 1975 to 33 in 2025, a fourfold rise.

Nine of the world’s ten most populous cities (Jakarta, Dhaka, Tokyo, New Delhi, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Cairo, Manila, Kolkata, and Seoul) are located in Asia.
