Guterres: Hostages must be released immediately and unconditionally
New York, June 2 (Hibya) – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that all hostages must be released immediately and unconditionally.
Guterres expressed horror at reports of Palestinians killed and injured while seeking aid in Gaza, stating that it is unacceptable for Palestinians to risk their lives for food.
He called for an immediate and independent investigation into the incidents and for the perpetrators to be held accountable, stating:
“Israel has clear obligations under international humanitarian law to accept and facilitate humanitarian aid. To meet the immense needs in Gaza, large-scale, unimpeded aid access must be immediately restored. The UN must be allowed to operate safely and with full respect for humanitarian principles.”
Guterres reiterated his call for an urgent, permanent, and sustainable ceasefire, stating: “All hostages must be released immediately and unconditionally. This is the only way to ensure safety for everyone. There is no military solution to this conflict.”
