Guterres: Freedom of expression must be respected in Iran
New York, January 12 (Hibya) – United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized that the freedom of expression of the Iranian people must be respected and protected.
Guterres said he was saddened by reports in recent days of Iranian authorities using violence against protesters, resulting in deaths and injuries.
Stressing that freedom of expression, freedom of association, and the right to peaceful assembly must be fully respected and protected, Guterres called on Iranian authorities to exercise maximum restraint and avoid the use of unnecessary or disproportionate force.
Guterres recommended taking steps to facilitate access to information in the country, including the restoration of communication networks.
