European Parliament calls on EU to defend its interests
Brussels, April 1 (Hibya) – Members of the European Parliament met with Presidents Costa and Ursula von der Leyen to discuss trade, defense, and competitiveness, urging action to strengthen the EU's economy and defense.
According to a statement from the Parliament, European Council President Antonio Costa emphasized a clear "sense of urgency" in boosting Europe’s competitiveness and creating conditions for greater investment in defense.
He added that the March 20 summit marked a turning point in the pursuit of a stronger, more sovereign EU. He stressed that only a more prosperous economy could provide the resources to invest in defense and called for decisive steps to close innovation and productivity gaps and reduce bureaucracy.
European Commission President von der Leyen outlined her strategy regarding U.S. tariffs: “Our goal is a negotiated solution,” she said. However, she added: “Europe has a strong retaliation plan, and we will use it.”
Von der Leyen also reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to diversifying relations with other partners and “unlocking the single market.” The Commission will present proposals next month to remove barriers and prevent the emergence of new ones.
