Eastern European countries ask the EU for more money for defense
Stockholm, December 16 (Hibya) – According to Politico, as the Russian threat intensifies, border countries are asking the EU for cash. Eight EU countries will discuss how to strengthen their defenses at a summit in Helsinki on Tuesday.
According to three European government officials, the leaders of eight EU countries bordering Russia will use the Helsinki summit to push for a dedicated defense fund in the bloc’s next long-term budget.
Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal said on Monday: “Strengthening Europe’s eastern flank must become a shared European responsibility.”
The summit, organized under the leadership of Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, highlights growing concern over Russia’s efforts to “test defenses” and “create panic among populations.”
Orpo told Finland’s daily Helsingin Sanomat on Saturday: “Russia will remain a threat to Europe in the future.”
