Dutch Foreign Minister Weel said in a statement marking the anniversary of the Holocaust that the effects of the tragedy are still being felt despite more than 80 years having passed. Van Weel noted that for many people, the past is not distant at all and that fear continues to exist even today.

Recalling that more than six million Jews, along with Roma and Sinti communities, were systematically murdered during the Holocaust, Van Weel stressed that this great crime against humanity must never be forgotten.

Van Weel said, “Today, we commemorate what must never be forgotten and what this asks of us today,” drawing attention to the importance of learning lessons from the past and preserving human values.
