CNN: Senior Russian official arrives in Washington to meet Trump administration
Washington, April 3 (Hibya) – According to CNN, senior Russian negotiator and head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, Kirill Dmitriev, has arrived in Washington. Two sources familiar with the plans say he is expected to meet today with senior Trump official Steve Witkoff to strengthen bilateral relations and work towards ending the war in Ukraine.
This visit marks the first time since the start of the war between Russia and Ukraine in 2022 that a senior Russian official visits Washington for talks, and it is seen as a step towards a noticeable warming of relations between the two countries since President Donald Trump returned to office in January.
Dmitriev is a close advisor to President Putin and took part in the Russian delegation that visited Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in February to discuss a possible agreement to end the war in Ukraine.
One source said the U.S. government temporarily lifted sanctions against Dmitriev to allow the State Department to issue him a visa to enter the United States. Another source mentioned a request had been submitted to the Treasury Department to suspend the sanctions temporarily.
The meeting between Kirill Dmitriev and Steve Witkoff is expected to take place today.
