Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, met yesterday in Beijing with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot.

Wang Yi recalled that French President Emmanuel Macron’s fourth official state visit to China has begun. He stated that each meeting between Chinese and French leaders not only shapes an important bilateral agenda but also draws significant attention from the international community. Wang stressed that in the face of complex global challenges, China and France—as major powers and permanent members of the UN Security Council—should strengthen communication and cooperation to fulfill their shared responsibilities. He expressed confidence that the visit will further enhance mutual strategic trust, deepen strategic cooperation, and inject new momentum into the China–France comprehensive strategic partnership.

During the meeting, Wang Yi explained the nature and serious consequences of the Japanese leader’s incorrect remarks on the Taiwan issue, reiterating China’s principled stance. He stressed that China and France, as victorious nations of World War II, must jointly safeguard the hard-won achievements of the war. Wang said Japan must not be allowed to create tensions using the Taiwan issue or repeat history and expressed hope that France will continue to understand and support China’s legitimate position.

French Minister Barrot noted that President Macron attaches great importance to relations with China, especially the special and deep friendship with President Xi Jinping. Highlighting the growing global crises, he said France and China, as permanent UNSC members, share a constructive responsibility to safeguard world peace.

Barrot emphasized that France firmly adheres to the One-China policy and expects Macron’s visit to further strengthen the friendship and cooperation between the two peoples. He expressed confidence that the visit will produce fruitful results and added that France, committed to promoting EU independence and autonomy, will actively support the development of EU–China relations.

The two sides also exchanged views on various international and regional issues, including the Ukraine crisis.
