Speaking at a press conference, spokesperson Guo Jiakun said, "China firmly supports Cuba in defending its national sovereignty and security and opposes foreign interference."

The diplomat also emphasized that China strongly opposes any actions and inhumane behavior that lead to depriving the Cuban people of their rights to life and development.

U.S. President Donald Trump, one day earlier, signed an executive order imposing tariffs on countries supplying oil to Cuba, declaring a state of emergency citing a national security threat allegedly originating from Havana.

One day earlier, Secretary of State Marco Rubio had said that the United States would engage in changing the government in Cuba.
