Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a message marking National Acadian Day.

Carney noted that Acadians are one of North America’s oldest French-speaking communities and that their roots in what is now Atlantic Canada go back more than 400 years.

Describing the history of the Acadian people as a story of “perseverance in the face of adversity,” Carney said, “On National Acadian Day, we celebrate the Acadian people, whose resilience has helped shape Canada’s identity.”

Carney emphasized that the resilience and cultural heritage of the Acadian people are among the important elements of Canada’s identity.
