Canada to strengthen Arctic security
Ottawa, January 18 (Hibya) – Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said they respect the sovereignty rights of Greenland and Denmark and will increase cooperation with NATO in the Arctic.
Prime Minister Carney announced that Canada will step up security measures in the Arctic region. Stressing their universal respect for the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark, he said Greenland’s future can be determined only by Greenland and Denmark.
Carney noted that the Arctic is of strategic importance for NATO’s northern and western flanks, adding that the region’s security can be ensured by working together with Alliance members. Saying tensions in the region have risen recently, Carney stated that Canada will strengthen its military capacity and invest in critical infrastructure.
Carney said, “We will continue to cooperate with our allies to protect this critical region; because when we work together, we are all stronger.”
