Adverse weather conditions disrupted transportation in Canada
Ottawa, January 27 (Hibya) – A snowstorm and freezing cold affecting Canada nationwide caused power outages, flight cancellations, and disruptions to transportation. More than 60 percent of flights were canceled at Toronto Pearson, the country’s largest airport.
According to CCTV, Canada’s Ministry of the Environment issued an “orange alert” for many regions of the country due to severe weather conditions that are rare and could cause serious damage, disruption, or health impacts.
In the province of Ontario, heavy snowfall lasting more than 10 hours and strong winds significantly reduced visibility, while provincial police reported responding to dozens of traffic accidents in the southwestern regions.
Due to the weather conditions, the local government in the capital, Ottawa, announced a winter weather parking ban effective on Monday between 10:00 and 19:00. Similar measures were also implemented by authorities in Toronto.
The storm left more than 10,000 households without electricity in the suburbs of Montreal in the province of Quebec. Power outages were also reported in Newfoundland on the Atlantic coast.
